Quarterlife Showcases 20-Something Angst

There’ve been quite a few web-based TV series out there for a while now but none of them really sparked my interest until I came across Quarterlife. The online series, which premiered this weekend, centers on a girl in her early-mid twenties, who video-blogs about her life, whilst trying to make her way through the challenges of being a twenty-something.

The most interesting thing about this series is that unlike the lesser known web-based series out there, Quarterlife actually has some big names behind it. Ok, maybe not huge names but some of the people involved in the series have some pretty notable prior gigs listed on their resumes. The series is produced and partially written by Marshall Herskovitz. He exec-produced My So Called Life and Thirty-Something. As both of those series centered on characters who were struggling through certain periods in their lives, Quarterlife certainly fits the theme of Herskovitz’s production style. Also among the writers is Devon Gummersall, who played Brian Krakow in MSCL.

The cast of Quarterlife includes Bitsie Tulloch who plays Dylan. Prior to this series Tulloch was in an episode of The West Wing and played Alex in the web-based series, Lonelygirl15. Fans of the new ABC Family series Greek will be pleased to see Scott M. Foster (yay! Cappie!) in Quarterlife. And according to IMDB, seasoned actress, Lolita Davidovich will be featured in at least one episode.

The story in Quarterlife seems pretty simple. Told partially from the perspective of Dylan's video blog, we’re introduced to Dylan and her friends, a group of twenty-somethings who are going through their post-college “I don’t know how the hell to be a grown-up” phase. As someone approaching the big 3-0, I know where they’re coming from. In college you think you’re going to change the world. Then you get out into the world and find its not as simple as you thought it would be. Finding a job, getting people to take you seriously and realizing that your days of living with roommates are far from over are all part of it. Plus there’s the drama with your friends, some of which are even more lost than you are. This is what Quarterlife is all about. Well, that and the fact that Dylan is broadcasting her and her friends’ dirty laundry on the internet. This doesn’t go unnoticed for long.
