SNL Goes Cingular

Live from your phone, it’s ‘Saturday Night!’ Just in case you can’t catch NBC’s perennial comedy sketch show at its regular time of 11:30 PM ET, or see reruns on Comedy Central, don’t have a Tivo, haven’t had time to dig through YouTube for clips, or haven’t bought all the DVD’s, you can get now also your fill of hilarity via Cingular Video.

Subscribers to Cingular Video can download clips of ‘Saturday Night Live’ lasting two to three minutes in length from classic and current episodes, as well as get ‘SNL’-themed ringtones and wallpaper. But before you go looking for your favorite funny bits make sure your phone is hi-tech enough. Cingular customers must have 3G handsets on the high speed 3G network and subscribe to a special package in order to view the ‘SNL’ content.

According to Cingular’s press release as posted on its website, Video subscribers will be able to draw from more than 100 episodes, including original shorts made specifically for Cingular Video users. Says Ron Lamprecht, Vice President, New Media, NBC Universal Television Networks Distribution, "This is a landmark deal for NBC Universal and Cingular."

‘SNL’ joins a growing crowd of other shows jumping on the WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) service bandwagon. TV.com reports that Showtime offers clips from its serial killer drama ‘Dexter.’ MTV, ABC and The CW also offer wireless content.
