Fan’s of Sci Fi’s new series Sanctuary will be pleased to know that the network has decided to keep the series around for another season. Sci Fi’s Exec VP of Original Programming Mark Stern announced the news today that the series has been picked up for a second season with the network ordering 13 new hour-long episodes of the show.
Sanctuary stars Amanda Tapping (Stargate Atlantis) and centers on Dr. Helen Magnus (Tapping), a scientist who works with various strange beings, helping them blend in with the human population (and keeping some of them tucked safely away in her lair-like home). Magnus works alongside forensic Psychiatrist Dr. Will Zimmerman, tech-geek Henry and her daughter Ashley to help protect the beings and at the same time, study them. While the series is full of strange and mysterious creatures that will surely appeal to die-hard sci-fi fanatics, part of the draw of the show for many surely has to do with Tapping’s involvement. Tapping has achieved enough fame from her work on Stargate that it seems likely that plenty of her fans have followed her from SGA to this new series. Others might be intrigued by the way the show is produced, relying heavily on green screens to create the backdrop for the series.
Of the second-season pickup, Stern says “"SCI FI will continue to trail blaze the television landscape by further exploring the many worlds of Sanctuary through its unique green screen environments. Technology and great storytelling makes Sanctuary a fantastic addition to SCI FI's 2009 lineup.”
This is likely to be great news for Tapping. I had the opportunity to meet her earlier this fall and based on what she said (Click Here for the videos!) about her work on the series, she seems to be extremely invested in it. It was a big leap for her to walk away from the familiarity of the Stargate world and it seems like it’s paying off for her.
