Sex Change, Anyone?
The ABC soap opera ‘All My Children’ welcomes a new character to the delicious, deceitful, delightful show. Zarf. Oh yes, that is the actual name. Zarf is flamboyant rock star with a British accent. What more could we ask? The name seems a bit androgynous, don’t you think?
Zarf is the first transgender individual on ‘All My Children.’ He will be going through an operation on the show to become a she. The actor, Jeffrey Carlson, is a bit worried. ""I worry about missing something, but I guess that would be the same with any character," he told the Associated Press . "I want the `All My Children' audience to go along. It's not for shock value. It's just another person whose story is being told in Pine Valley."
Transgender individuals have appeared in television before, albeit sparingly. ABC is looking for something new; something edgy to spark viewers. ‘All My Children’ has seen a decline in ratings in the past decade, according to the Associated Press.
The 35-year old show is testing the waters. The network brass, nor Carlson have commented on whether or not Zarf will stay with All My Children after his operation is complete. Currently, he is involved in some dramatic repartee with Bianca.
If you watch, you probably know what the hell that means. If you don’t, a dude is going to the mini-guillotine, and that’s the long and short of it.
