While BBC has already announced a third series for hit program Sherlock, a hop and a skip over the pond, the U.S. has yet to get the series on regular TV. PBS’ Masterpiece is expected to air in the States come May, and, as it turns out, audiences will not have long to wait after that to own their own episodes on Blu-Ray and DVD.
Sherlock: Season 2 will be available in Region 2 come May 22nd. The second series, which aired on BBC Canada in February and will hit U.S. audiences on May 6, pits Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) against some of his most devious enemies, including hacker Irene Adler (Laura Pulver) and Jim Moriarty (Andrew Scott) in three adrenaline pumping mysteries. In Season 2, executive producers Stephen Moffat and Mark Gatiss tackle “A Scandal in Belgravia,” “The Hounds of Baskerville,” and “The Reichenbach Fall.” While Blu-Ray and DVD copies will run a little pricey for only three episodes, at $29.98 for DVDs and $39.98 for Blu-Rays, I still consider Sherlock to be a good investment, due to each episode’s re-watch value.
Another boon for the series is that each episode runs 90 minutes, so if you think about the series as if you are purchasing three films and not three episodes, it might make loosening your wallet a wee bit easier. Plus, Sherlock will come with several bonus features to supplement the episodes, including audio commentary for two of the episodes and behind-the-scenes featurette “Sherlock Uncovered.” In the meantime if you need a quick Cumberbatch fix, the 35 year-old actor appears in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, available on Blu-Ray Tuesday. It’s going to be a Cumberbatch-filled spring.
