Sherlock Season 3 To Premiere In The U.K. On New Years Day
Sorry, U.K., the not-so-good news is, you have to wait until 2014 to see the new season of Sherlock, just like the rest of us. The better news is, you don’t have to wait very long into the new year to see the great detective make his grand return, as Sherlock will return for Season 3 on BBC One on January 1. Not a bad way to start the new year, huh?
The premiere date for Season 3 was announced via hearse (and BBC One tweet), which is kind of fitting when we consider Sherlock’s fate at the end of last season, and more likely, the title of Season 3's first episode…
Vague spoilers ahead!
“The Empty Hearse” is the title of the first episode of Season 3, which — as the picture in the Tweet above indicates — will air January 1, 2014. As we mentioned last week when we were discussing the planned announcement of the Season 3 premiere date, the episode will bring Sherlock “back” from the dead. That in itself should barely qualify as a spoiler, as I doubt anyone really expected Sherlock to stay dead, considering the series was set to return for a third season. But from the sound of it, he’s been laying low for a couple of years, as Season 3 picks up two years later as Holmes returns from the dead when London finds itself under the threat of a huge terrorist attack. While the first ep is titled “The Empty Hearse,” the second episode is titled “The Sign of Three” and the third is “His Last Vow.” Will Sherlock manage to survive the season this time around? We’ll find out soon enough.
While those in the UK will only have to wait about a month for Sherlock to arrive, fans across the pond have a bit longer to count down, as PBS Masterpiece won’t air Season 3 until January 19 at 10:00 p.m. On the bright side, it’ll be paired with the fourth season of Downton Abbey, so we have that to look forward to!
