Springer’s Director Of Security Lands Own Talker?
While still in the very early stages, NBC Universal recently ramped up momentum in its talks for a syndicated talk show with Jerry Springer’s long-time “Director of Security” Steve Wilkos. Yes, the great Baldino himself. The former marine turned cop turned bodyguard who has courageously stood like a pillar of strength among chaos, maintaining order even among Springer’s more rambunctious guests such as enraged Klansmen, troublesome transvestites, dead beat dads, and malevolent midgets, (and the list could go on ad infinitum).
Broadcasting and Cable reports that Wilkos’ talk show picked up steam partially due to NBC placing a daily syndication with ‘Deal or No Deal’ on the back burner, although a deal with Wilkos had been in development for quite some time beforehand. Additionally, tvgasm.com says that NBCU is hoping the new talker starring Wilkos will act as a companion to both ‘Springer’ and ‘The Maury Show.’ Look for Wilkos to premier possibly in September of this year.
In recent seasons ‘The Jerry Springer Show’ has included segments called ‘Steve to the Rescue,’ where Wilkos takes on the role of host and goodwill ambassador, if not real-life comic book hero. He has helped women leave potentially violent boyfriends and even entered brothels to aid teenage prostitutes. I’d like to see Dr. Phil try any of that.
Born and raised in Chicago, IL., Wilkos served seven years in the Marine Corps. Following an honorable discharge he followed in his father’s footsteps by becoming a Chicago cop. In May 1994 he had the opportunity to moonlight as a security guard on Springer’s infamous show for a Ku Klux Klan-related segment, and eventually took the job on full-time. Check out his bio page on the Springer homepage here.
