The Strain's New Teaser Puts New York's Lights Out
The brief teaser for Guillermo Del Toro's FX drama The Strain offers the creepy promise that "He is Here" as we see an eclipse take place moments before the lights go out in New York City. While the eclipse almost reminds me of Heroes, the music prompts an ominous War of the Worlds flashback. And judging by the apocalyptic nature of the subject matter, that may not be entirely off the mark. But… who is here? We don't know yet, but I'm thinking it's not good news.
Based on a series of books co-written by Del Toro and Chuck Hogan, The Strain centers on Dr. Eph Goodweather, a CDC doctor who's called in with his rapid-response team to investigate a situation involving an airplane that stopped dead on a runway with all of its lights out and shades pulled down. "What he finds makes his blood run cold," according to the book description. And some recently released photos for the FX adaptation give us a peek of that.
The story involves a vampiric virus that's rapidly spreading throughout New York City. So the teased eclipse and blackout could be a literal situation, or meant more figuratively, indicating that nighttime won't be such a great thing for the city that never sleeps.
This new teaser follows the previously released teaser, which takes the viral video approach in showing some dark and seriously creepy things happening in New York…
That one was also titled "He is Here" but the only thing we saw "here" were a lot of rats headed somewhere. Someone call the exterminator! In this case, that might be Kevin Durand's character Vasiliy Fet, who's said to be a second-generation Ukranian-American rat exterminator. And speaking of the cast, it also includes Corey Stoll as Dr. Goodweather, David Bradley playing Professor Abraham Setrakian, Mia Maestro as Dr. Nora Martinez, and Sean Astin, who's playing a CDC administrator.
No official premiere date for the series has been announced, but FX is expected to get The Strain on the air sometime in July.
