Summer TV Preview: The World Series of Pop Culture on VH1

Last summer many of us found ourselves strangely addicted to a new game show put together by VH1 and Entertainment Weekly. Viewers of ‘The World Series of Pop Culture’ were most likely divided between two types of people. Those who couldn’t believe how much useless pop-culture trivia some people had stored in their memories and those who watched and could answer half or more of the questions correctly. Pop-culture junkies will be happy to know that the series will return with new episodes next Monday.

According to VH1’s website, thousands of people auditioned for this summer’s ‘World Series of Pop Culture’ tournament and were narrowed down to 16 teams. Pat Kieman is back to host the event, which will award the winning team with $250,000. That’s a lot of money to win just for knowing a bunch of facts pertaining to movies, music and TV.

In case you didn’t catch the show last summer, here’s how it works:

Two teams go head-to-head in each round. They get a category and pick which of their players will attempt to answer the questions for that category. If the player cant answer his or her questions correctly, the opposing team’s player has a chance to answer. Each round, whichever player answered the fewest questions correctly is eliminated. Once all three of a team’s players have been eliminated, the team left standing wins and moves on to the next round of the tournament.

In ‘Jeopardy,’ you generally see polished professional-types playing. In ‘The Price Is Right,’ its mostly a lot of middle-class average-joes. On ‘The World Series of Pop Culture,’ the people playing are generally the t-shirt and jeans types. They can quote obscure lines from classic 80’s movies, know way too much about celebrity gossip and generally watch too much TV. This is probably why I find this show so addicting. It’s nice to see my fellow pop-culture nerds finally getting their dues.

’The 2007 World Series of Pop Culture’ will premiere on Monday, July 9 at 9:00 p.m.
