TV Icon Andy Rooney Has Died

TV icon Andy Rooney passed away last night at the age of 92 years old. Rooney is well known for sharing his thoughts on CBS’ 60 Minutes, as well as for working for more than half a century at CBS.

According to CBS News, Rooney died Friday night in the hospital in New York after complications following a minor surgery. Born in 1919, Rooney started working at CBS in 1949. Since then, he’s worked both behind and in front of the camera, serving as a writer, a producer, and eventually, a television personality, a role, as CBS News points out, he was never comfortable in.

“It's a sad day at 60 Minutes and for everybody here at CBS News," CBS News and 60 Minutes executive producer’s Jeff Fager said. "It's hard to imagine not having Andy around. He loved his life and he lived it on his own terms. We will miss him very much."

Last September, it was announced that Rooney was stepping down from his role on 60 Minutes after 1097 essays for the CBS program. He will most certainly be missed by the generations of people who have become familiar with his face, voice and contributions to television over his many years in the industry.

Kelly West
Assistant Managing Editor

Kelly put her life-long love of movies, TV and books to greater use when she joined CinemaBlend as a freelance TV news writer in 2006, and went on to serve as the site’s TV Editor before joining the staff full-time in 2011 and moving over to other roles at the site. At present, she’s an Assistant Managing Editor who spends much of her time brainstorming and editing features, analyzing site data, working with writers and editors on content planning and the workflow, and (of course) continuing to obsess over the best movies and TV shows (those that already exist, and the many on the way). She graduated from SUNY Cortland with BA in Communication Studies and a minor in Cinema Studies. When she isn't working, she's probably thinking about work, or reading (or listening to a book), and making sure her cats are living their absolute best feline lives.
