TV Recap: Kid Nation - I Just Like The Recess Part
And once again, Taylor doesn’t want to work. So what else is new in Bonanza City? In tonight’s episode of Kid Nation, titled “I Just Like The Recess Part,” the Town Council finally decided to enforce their punishment on Taylor… for about half a day. I’m telling you, that girl’s got the whole pouting routine down to an art form.
The episode started off with more chicken drama. Some of the kids wanted to have a big chicken feast but of course, this meant prying the cuddly chickens away from Taylor and her band of loyal followers. Taylor was extra protective of the brown chickens because she determined that they were the prettiest. The fluffy ones were ugly and therefore, fit to be slaughtered. After a brief argument, the kids agreed to let Taylor pick which chickens would be dinner and which ones would be spared.
The Council got some books on the history of Bonanza that each of the districts had to study. They assumed correctly that the information in the books would play a part in the next showdown. As always, the green district worked their butts off studying for the challenge and it certainly paid off during the competition.
The showdown involved balloons, nuts, slingshots and of course, questions about the history of the town. The green team, who did well with the questions and equally well using the slingshot managed to take the Upper Class title. The blue team got Merchant Class, the yellow team squeaked by winning the Cooks status and the red district, due to their inability to get the hang of the whole slingshot thing earlier in the competition came in last place.
Of the competitions, this was probably the least interesting one of the season but the real payoff came at the end when the remaining nuts were dumped into a plastic container. If there were enough to fill up the container, they’d win the challenge. Sure enough, there were more than enough nuts left over and the kids got to choose between a library full of books or an arcade.
Since Taylor hadn’t lived up to her promise to work harder, the Council told her that this week she wouldn’t benefit from the challenge if they won it. So naturally, she hoped the Council would choose the library since she doesn’t like to read. They chose the arcade. With just over a week left in Bonanza, it would’ve been silly to go with the books. Taylor pouted over this and then contemplated spending more time with the chickens and once again, refusing to pull her weight in the kitchen. Eventually though, she sucked it up and did some dishes. Ok, she did a lot of dishes or at least, that’s how they made it look. After that, the kids let her into the arcade. So her punishment didn’t last very long and I’m thinking that she’ll revert back to her old “Beauty Queens Don’t Do Dishes” attitude soon enough.
As a member of the green district, Hunter wasn’t obligated to help out any of the other districts with their tasks. He could’ve spent all of his time in the arcade as most of the other kids were doing but instead he opted to help out in the kitchen. This was enough to earn him the gold star. The Council also made the decision to padlock the arcade each day and keep it locked until chores were done. And they decided to appoint Sophia, who has already proven her ability to boss people around in an attempt to keep order, the position of Bonanza Sheriff.

I can’t say this was the most exciting episode of the season but I did appreciate the powerful music that played in the background while Taylor manned up and did some dishes. And the final few moments of the episode, in which we saw Jared sneak into the arcade, play a round of DDR and sneak out undetected were certainly entertaining.
