TV Recap: Lost - Left Behind
ABC's action drama 'Lost' continues its rollercoaster ride to the finale in May with another look into the wild life of Kate Austen, our resident ex-convict/fugitive, and makes things very interesting for our castaways.
Kate is still in captivity in the game room that the Others have in their barracks. She wastes no time in making no friends by attacking Juliet, who was only bringing her food. The next morning, she is visited by none other than John Locke. Though he doesn't really explain the shocking ending of his episode, with him seeing his own dad on the island, he says that he is going to stay with the Others, and that Jack isn't going anywhere. Though Kate pesters him with questions (what a shock), he doesn't answer any of them and leaves.
Kate's flashback shows us how she ended up seeing her mother for the first time after blowing up her father in her old house. She does it with the help of Cassiday. For those who don't remember, Cassidy is the woman who Sawyer conned out of her life savings last season. We first see Cassidy pulling the fake-watch trick unsuccessfully. She's about to have the cops called on her when Kate saves the day. Cassidy smartly perceives that Kate's worried about the cops. At a local bar, though Kate lies about her name, she does spill the beans about why she's on the run. Cassidy, against all odds, decides to help "Lucy" out with seeing her mother.
In the subplot of the episode, Sawyer is told by Hurley that, after the shocking death of Paulo and Nikki, he's in trouble. There will be a vote, and it's very likely that Sawyer will be banished away from the rest of the castaways. Hurley urges him to do right, by being nice with Claire and with Desmond. After he and Desmond kill a boar and roast it, Charlie comes up and Sawyer, through friendly conversation, realizes that there never was a vote. Hurley explains to Sawyer that the truth is that since Jack, Kate, Sayid and Locke are gone, he's the only person who can lead them through the tough times. Despite some quibbling, Sawyer decides to take on this role.
Back in the barracks, Kate is still stewing in captivity when a gas canister is thrown into her room, and despite her efforts, she's left unconscious. When she wakes up, she's in the middle of the jungle. Handcuffed. To Juliet. Kate wants to know why they're handcuffed, but Juliet feigns ignorance. Kate decides to go back to the barracks, to get Jack, and Juliet taunts her for her love of Jack. Which, during a rainstorm, leads to them duking it out and Kate dislocating Juliet's shoulder. Things get worse, though, when Kate hears the onslaught of the smoke monster that killed Eko.
Kate and Juliet hide in a group of trees, and the monster comes up very close to them and...flashes a strange light in their eyes, then vanishes. Juliet says she has no idea what it is and has never seen it, which Kate finds hard to believe. After relocating Juliet's shoulder, Kate is shocked to find out why Juliet thinks Jack doesn't want her to come back: Kate broke his heart. Juliet believes it true, but Kate can't buy it.
Soon, they come up to those dreaded fences that can kill a man, that the castaways came up against a few weeks ago. Worse, the smoke monster is back. Juliet, however, pulls out a key to the handcuffs, uncuffs herself, and manages to turn the fences off so they can get through, but back on so the smoke monster cannot. The smoke monster tries to get through, but the fences stop even this thing. Kate is shocked, and Juliet admits that she knows of it, but not what it is.

Back in the flashback, we see Kate and Cassidy run up against the U.S. Marshal that's always gone after Kate; luckily, Kate gets out alive as she has Cassidy pose as a lookalike. Then, they make it to the restaurant where Kate's mother, Diane, works. Cassidy spills something on Diane, so she has to go to the bathroom, where Kate is. Kate wants to know why Diane told the cops about what she did, but Diane isn't sorry. She says it's not her fault who she loves, and Kate just won't understand it. As such, the next time Diane sees Kate, she will immediately call the cops.
On the island, Kate and Juliet make it to the barracks, which are oddly empty. Kate goes into Jack's little house, finds him unconscious and wakes him up. He's shocked to find that everyone's gone, excepting Sayid and Juliet. Kate apologizes for coming back, but Jack says that the only thing to do is go back to the main island with the castaways.
In the final flashback, we see Cassidy dropping Kate off for the final time. Kate wants to know who the man is who conned her out of her money so she can find him, but all Cassidy admits to is her pregnancy. She's tearful, but says she'll make it out alive. With that, Kate, who tells Cassidy her real name, is gone.
Finally, Jack and Sayid are reunited and ready to leave, but Sayid immediately wants to know why Juliet is joining them. Jack says it's because she was left behind, too, so the Others may not want her. And so, these four head back to the island.
It was a good episode, but I must say, it was a bit of a slower episode, after the fast pace of all the March episodes. Next week, it's Juliet's turn. What interesting flashbacks will she have?
