TV Recap: My Boys - Friends of Friends
Poor PJ and Bobby have been broken up with. I guess it was more of a first date rejection but still. It’s so hard to find new friends once you’re out of school, I was really pulling for them. Not so much for Kenny and Mike but who wouldn’t want to be friends with the adorably geeky pairing of PJ and Bobby? Everyone can’t be as smitten as I, I suppose. Oooh, plus, Brendan finally stands up for himself. Who knew that was even possible?
He’s been working non-stop since the bar opened. He works as a bartender, gets the bands, keeps the liquor on hand and mediates fights between the waitresses. He’s there 24/7 but it’s paying off because the bar is one of Chicago’s hot new spots. The only problem in his life is that his partner, you know the guy who put up all the money, treats him like any other bartender. He asks him to refill his drinks and lets huge groups of his friends drink the good stuff for free. Basically, he’s turned into a big old douche.
Instead of just speaking to him directly, though, Brendan asks Bobby to talk to his friend and mention that Brendan and he are supposed to be partners. That’s a little awkward, you know, and Bobby gets so wrapped up in good scotch and old stories to ask. Looks like Brendan’s on his own but, hey, he has to learn how to deal with it sometime, right. When he finally does talk to John, Mr. Douche tells him he’s an “equaller” partner since he fronted all the money. Guess what Brendan did? You’ll never guess because he’s usually such a pushover. He quit. Yup. Right there in the middle of the bar, he quit. There were people all around and he told Mr. Douche he could handle all the responsibilities Brendan has been shouldering. Sometimes there’s no nice way to let some one know what they’re like. Yay for Brendan. He’s getting better every episode. And don’t worry, naturally John compromised and they’ll be more equality in their partnership now.
Hopefully that holds true to Stephanie and PJ, too. Ever wonder what Stephanie’s life outside of PJ and the boys is like? Me, too. Turns out she actually has lots of girlfriends and they’ve decided to get together for Stephanie’s birthday. PJ is reluctant at first but then Stephanie reminds her of all the time Steph spends with the guys and PJ agrees to attend. She promises not to even make fun of the squealing at presents that is bound to occur. There turns out not to be any squealing, but there are some characters PJ probably wouldn’t encounter otherwise. There’s also Stephanie’s friend, Emily. This girl is fun and relaxed and exactly the type of girl PJ can befriend. It’s a tricky thing to make a new friend, though, so PJ knows she can’t just ask the girl to hang out. Instead, she asks Stephanie to come to dinner and then mentions they should invite Emily. It turns into a boyfriend thing and soon enough, Stephanie calls to say she’s sick so it’s a double date for PJ, Bobby, Emily and her boyfriend.
PJ is nervous as can be because she’s so excited to make a couple friend. She didn’t realize she missed having some until she met Emily and her boyfriend. These are people that lead an adult life. They have two dogs and he’s a pediatric surgeon. When Bobby offers them tickets to any game they would like, he says the kids he works with would love that. Yup, they’re seemingly the perfect couple. They all appear to get along pretty well, too, except that Emily and her guy have to rush home to let the dogs out. Seriously. You’d think PJ and Bobby never had a date that didn’t go well because they took it as nothing more than that. Then they get the news. Bobby is too pushy, according to Stephanie who was given this excuse by Emily. They both love PJ but they didn’t buy Bobby’s nice guy act. But he is a nice guy! I mean, they seem perfect but Bobby’s too nice. Whatever. Who needs couple friends anyway when you have Mike and Kenny?
They could definitely be considered a couple. They’re new friend is even a couples’ counselor. In fact, it’s the same counselor that Meredith and Andy went to a while back. You remember the one that had them so mad that they finally found something in common and worked their issues out? Yup. Him. Of course, once he and Andy discussed where they knew each other from, he was gone from Kenny and Mike’s life forever. Before he took off, though, he did let them work through their issues. It turns out Mike feels belittle by Kenny because he never listens to Mike’s ideas for the store. Kenny feels like Mike never lets anything go. With their new friends’ help, they see the other’s side and stop fighting. Well, not really because that would suck but maybe they’ll be a little bit less bickering now.
It sucks to be broken up with before a friendship can even begin but at least these guys know they won’t lose one another. How cheesy is that? I know but you have to admit you’re a little jealous, right?
