TV Review: The Hills - Recover Girl
Putting the main focus on Whitney and her life-changing career search marked a refreshingly tasteful change of drama for the overly Spencer-obsessed second season of ‘The Hills’. The riveting return of Super Intern Emily suspiciously coincided (time always seems to be on the side of the producers) with the presentment of college-graduating Whitney’s future employment opportunity with the magazine that she’s so obsequiously served for the past five years, and it seemed that Emily was the only other graduating intern who’d be competing with Whitney for the vaguely described Fashion Coordinator position. Lisa Love (who’s becoming increasingly softer) told Whitney that she’d love to have her work under her after she graduated but that many equally qualified candidates would be considered for the position. As the dramatic set-up for the rivalry between competing interns climaxed, Heidi and Spencer’s unchanging troubles felt like meaningless afterthoughts (well, I suppose they always do).
Spencer became inexplicably crazed about the idea of Heidi moving in with him, giving the poor girl an unreasonable ultimatum. Living with Lauren, according to Spencer, ruined their relationship. I couldn’t have been more proud of Heidi when she accused Spencer of looking for a way out of the relationship. It looks like Lauren’s inimitable wisdom is finally rubbing off on Heidi. The two met in Spencer’s car (what is with this couple and their need to have their rare meaningful conversations in a car?) where Heidi finally told Spencer that she wouldn’t be moving in with him. An enraged Spencer replied: “My answer is get out of my car.”
Some random Oscar-themed “Good Morning America” shoot provided Whitney an ample chance to outshine by-the-books Emily. Whitney made quite the impression on some mega-powerful editor who immediately commented that Whitney would make a beautiful model (this, of course, accompanied by alternating shots of a stoic, though obviously embittered, Emily). Lisa Love seemed to think that Whitney would do Hilary Swank proud by wearing her dress on the “Good Morning America” appearance. Whitney seemed to be getting superlative treatment from the Vogue gods, but Emily somehow managed to get herself a spot in the television appearance as well. There is, after all, room for only one (standing) intern in the standard television appearance, and Whitney would have to learn that the painfully embarrassing way.
In a scene reminiscent of Carrie Bradshaw’s voiceover-saturated runway fall, Whitney (in a seemingly equally staged manner) took the plunge before quickly recovering and putting on a smile exuding that classic Whitney sheen. Lauren was quite supportive, as usual, while Emily was so obviously basking in Whitney’s humiliation. It wasn’t as surprising as the producers wanted it to be when Lisa Love told Whitney the fall was an “endearing moment,” and that she’d been chosen to go to New York for the interview for Fashion Coordinator (a position that would make her in charge of all interns, including Lauren). It was extremely surprising, however, to see Whitney and Audrina in a scene together. Apparently the producers went on a pre-finale cast bonding cram session. It’s a shame Heidi was too busy getting verbally abused by Spencer to get in on it.
