TV Review: I Hate My 30’s – Conceptual Madness
Creators: Brice Beckham and David Fickas
Premieres: Thurs. July 26, 10.30 pm on VH1
It’s impossible to ever forget the concept behind ‘I Hate My 30’s,’ no matter how hard you’ll want to try. If the overbearingly unfunny guide, Dr. Rod, doesn’t do the job, then the cliché-saturated jokes, which all turn on that same fatigued concept (which, by the way, will not be directly referred to in this brief review for sanity reasons), will. There were many moments when Carrie Bradshaw would’ve told you that she hated her thirties too, but she didn’t need to come out and tell you, because you just knew. ‘I Hate My 30’s,’ VH1’s new absurdist comedy that follows a bunch of office idiots as they continually (i.e., every passing second) come to terms with their age, is like an attention-craving kid that goes to the most unsubtle of lengths to get his message across: he just says it over and over again.
In the pilot, it’s Carol’s thirtieth birthday and her officemates, despite her desire for a low-key day, just won’t let her forget it. Carol and her officemates, one of the most immature groups of adults you will ever have the displeasure of watching (and not in any even remotely amusing way), are portrayed by a slew of no-name actors and actresses who fail to generate any laughs, but are not the sole culprits for this comedic travesty. (I’m looking at you, writing team behind the ludicrously bad dialogue forced on these quasi-innocent actors and actress.)
Here’s a promising concept: hating the show about hating, well, you know.
