TV Review: She's Got The Look

This week TV Land is bringing back their modeling competition, She’s Got The Look. If you’re unfamiliar with the series, this competition is a little bit different than some of the other modeling reality shows out there. The twist is that all of the women who try out are over the age of 35. In it’s second season, which will consist of eight episodes, as opposed to last season’s six, the aspiring models will compete against one another in the hopes of winning a contract with Wilhelmina Models, Inc., a spread in SELF magazine and a $100,000 cash prize.

The pilot episode is a condensed look at the audition process. As the competition only runs for eight episodes, that doesn’t leave much time for the judges to narrow down their selections from the many women who try out to twenty semi-finalists. Before the end of the first episode, that group is cut in half and the final women go on to move into the posh New York loft.

The age-factor plays a pretty big role in this show, not only because we’re dealing with women all of whom might be considered past their prime in terms of modeling years but also because these aren’t women who are just starting out in life. The finalists all have a past and personalities that have been shaped from years of life experience. In that sense I think this above all else is what makes She’s Got the Look a great show to watch. From the first episode there are a few women who stand out among the rest of them due to their own quirky nature. One woman comes across as overconfident and phony but that only makes her that much more fun to watch. Another might be perceived as “eccentric” but that might just be a polite way of saying she’s pretty weird. And then there’s the woman who is only now just discovering that she’s beautiful.

Personalities aside, this is a modeling competition, so naturally the women will participate in various modeling challenges. The second episode includes the elimination of two finalists after the judges review their photos. This includes a totally bizarre dramatic exit on the part of one finalist who essentially eliminates herself. It’s not to be missed.
