Tuesday Night Drama Queen: Rescue Me
Have you ever wanted to start watching a TV show but felt like you missed the boat on it? It’s a couple of seasons into it and you figure you’ve already missed way too much to understand what’s going on? Well that was me with ‘Rescue Me’. I’d seen a few episodes of season 1 but the show slipped off my radar before the first season even ended and I completely missed season two. With the new season starting, I decided to give the show another shot.
Season three looks like its shaping up to be chock full of fire, affairs and addictions.
To briefly recap tonight’s episode:
Jimmy’s son is sleeping with his teacher. I seriously don’t understand women sleeping with their teenaged students. Tommy is clearly attracted to this teacher. If he ends up in bed with her that’ll just add a whole new layer of “ew” to this plotline.
Probie is preparing to become a full-fledged firefighter and it seems evident that the rest of the crew will continue treating him like the rookie. How long will he stick around for that treatment?
Sean is sleeping with Tommy’s sister? Yeah. That’s going to end well.
Lou is completely falling apart.

Tommy’s ex-wife, Janet is sleeping with his brother. Does anyone think that’s somehow payback for Tommy’s affair with Jimmy’s wife or is there more to it than that? When a girl sleeps with her husband’s brother there’s something majorly messed up going on with her. Don’t get me wrong, Johnny is pretty sexy (he was the reason I was addicted to ‘Oz’) but he’s Tommy’s brother. That’s just totally wrong. That being said, I can’t wait to see the explosions when Tommy finds out.
Tommy saved that girl’s life in the last few moments of the show. Where did that come from? I gotta say, as many times as I see that scene in TV shows and movies (you know, the one where the person is declared dead but that one doctor/nurse/EMT guy/fireman keeps going with the CPR and what not?), I never get sick of it. Every time, I wonder if the hero is going to save the victim or if this is one of those rare times when the dead person doesn’t come back. In this case, little sally (or whatever her name was) coughed up some black liquid and Tommy lit up a much-deserved smoke.
During Tommy’s hero scene, they kept flashing over to Janet in bed with his brother (slowly revealing him inch by inch). I’m not sure why they tied the two scenes together . Maybe it was just for dramatic effect. Whatever they were trying to do, it worked. The music, the not-quite-slow-motion pace and the slow revelation that Janet’s new boyfriend is in fact, her ex-brother-in-law was the perfect ending to the episode. As far as season premieres go, this one had everything and it definitely left me wanting to see the next few episodes.
All in all I’d say I’m moderately caught up on everything. I definitely need to DVR some of the older episodes though. I have no idea why Lou is falling apart so comments on his story are welcome.
Anyone else just getting into the show? If so, what did you think? Or, if you’re a regular fan of the ‘Rescue Me’, what did you think of the season premiere? Any predictions for this season?
