Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Will Introduce A Key Family Member During Season 2
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt may have gotten the boot from NBC, but the sitcom has had pretty great success over at Netflix. Enough people binge-watched the first season that the subscription streaming service signed on for Season 2, and now we’re starting to get glimpses of what the new episodes will look like. Today, the show revealed that Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is about to introduce us to an unlikely character: Kimmy Schmidt’s mom.
Series lead Ellie Kemper explained that the big mother reveal will happen during Season 2, but considering the background of our New York-based heroine, introducing her mother could be a little less than rosy. Kemper told THR that the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt mother has not yet been cast, but she does know she wasn’t particularly attentive.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt kicked off with an underground cult in Indiana, where Kimmy and a few other cult devotees spent fifteen years of their lives. They were rescued in the premiere episode, and Kimmy went on to move to New York, where she developed a love for candy, found her first job and had lots of adventures. Throughout the first season, Kimmy developed a few friendships, namely with her pal Titus, but while we met Kimmy’s cult friends, the closest we came to Kimmy’s family was meeting her stepfather, state trooper Randy, who met Kimmy’s mom when she was already in the cult. Now that Kimmy has headed back to Indiana to testify against her cult leader, there should be plenty of opportunities to meet the disastrous people that surrounded Kimmy while she was growing up.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt has done pretty well keeping guest stars under wraps so far. The comedy secured both Jon Hamm and Tina Fey for Season 1, where they popped up late during the season. Clearly, Kimmy’s mother hasn’t been cast yet, but even once she is, it could be a while before we learn who will be playing her. We’ll keep you posted.
One thing is for certain: Unbreakable won’t be back for binge-watching for quite some time. Netflix premiered the first season this past March, and it’s probably safe to assume we’ll get new episodes around the same time next year. In the meantime, you can take a look at what Netflix has coming up here or check out our full summer TV premiere schedule.
