The latest update on the fate of Up All Night is that the show will go on, kind of. The worst of the recent bad news for the comedy came when we learned that series star Christina Applegate was leaving the show. At that point, there were rumors that she would be replaced on the series, or else, that the NBC comedy was going to be cancelled, rather than switching from its single-camera format to a multi-camera format for the planned five remaining episodes of the second season. As it turns out, the answer is somewhere in between those scenarios.
While there's no official word on whether or not Lisa Kudrow (as rumored) or anyone else will step in to fill Christina Applegate's vacated role as wife and mother, Reagan Brinkley, Deadline says the show will go on… for one more episode, anyway. When it was decided that NBC would switch the series from a single-camera format to a multi-camera format (filming before a live audience), the network ordered five episodes to close out the series' second season. But that order has now been reduced to one episode, with experienced sitcom director James Burrows signed on to direct. Deadline says the future of the series beyond that one episode is still up in the air, however Will Arnett and Maya Rudolph are reportedly getting pilot offers. No surprise there.
At the very least, this one episode of Up All Night should be an event in itself, if only to show us what the show looks like as a multi-camera comedy. And what better way to do that than by bringing in a seasoned director like Burrows, whose credits include a bevy of beloved multi-camera sitcoms from the last few decades (Taxi, Cheers, 3rd Rock from the Sun, Frasier, Friends, Two and a Half Men's pilot, Will & Grace, The Big Bang Theory's pilot, Mike & Molly, to name a few). Needless to say, if there's a guy who's up for the task of bringing Up All Night to the multi-camera format, it's probably Burrows.
We'll have to wait and see what they do about Reagan (if she'll be replaced, or else, completely absent from the episode) and hopefully we'll soon learn when we can expect this episode to air.
