Wait, Is Hawkeye Going To Be On Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D?
During the past two seasons of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., we’ve met a variety of people that have worked for the clandestine organization, including four agents from the movies have crossed over to the small screen: series lead Phil Coulson, former director Nicky Fury, former deputy director Maria Hill and HYDRA spy Jasper Sitwell. Now it’s possible a fifth name might be added to that list. Clark Gregg, who plays Coulson, posted an image this week that may hint at things to come regarding Marvel archer Clint Barton, a.k.a. Hawkeye.
The following panel from Secret Avengers #10, released in late November, shows the comic book versions of Hawkeye and Coulson in an intense face-off. While it’s possible that Gregg just shared the photo because he liked it, this may also be his discreet way of teasing a possible appearance from the archer. The only time Coulson and Barton have interacted with each other on screen was during Thor, although the two agents are well acquainted with each other. Jeremy Renner will be reprising the Hawkeye role for next year’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron and is rumored to appear in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. Of all The Avengers to bring on to the show, Hawkeye would certainly be the easiest. Unlike his teammates (excluding Black Widow), he doesn’t have superpowers. All you have to do is stick a bow and arrow in Renner’s hand, and you can pull off most of the same stunts that we saw him do in The Avengers.

Earlier this month, if was revealed that The Avengers: Age of Ultron would tie into Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and Hawkeye showing up could be the way they do that. After helping his fellow Avengers take down Ultron, Barton meets up with Coulson but soon gets involved in a dispute with his former S.H.I.E.L.D. superior. Another catalyst for an appearance could be Bobbi Morse, a.k.a Mockingbird. In the comics, Hawkeye and Mockingbird were romantically involved with each other for a long time and briefly married. Morse, played by Adrianne Palicki, was introduced “A Hen In The Wolfhouse” this season, and is one of Coulson’s key players in the fight against HYDRA. Most details regarding Morse’s past on the show have involved her former marriage to Lance Hunter, and no relationship with Barton has been established outside of being work colleagues. However, that doesn’t mean that something couldn’t spark between them, whether it’s on TV or in the movies.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns on March 3 to its regular timeslot at Tuesday, 9 p.m. ET. after Agent Carter finishes its run.
