Why Agent Carter Season 3 Absolutely Needs To Happen After That Finale
Warning: major spoilers ahead for the finale of Season 2 of Agent Carter.
Midseason isn’t always an easy time for TV fans, as a lot of the big shows go into winter hiatuses, but one highlight over the past couple of years has been the ABC drama Marvel’s Agent Carter. The first season ran for only eight episodes in 2015, but Season 2 was bumped up to ten installments for 2016. Sadly, the finale has now aired with no news of another season next year, but considering where we last saw Peggy, Jarvis, and the rest of the crew, Season 3 of Agent Carter absolutely needs to happen.
If Agent Carter is done forever after the Season 2 finale, that means we’ll never see a payoff for the big cliffhanger that saw a mystery assassin shooting Agent Jack Thompson to death in the doorway of his hotel room. Jack wasn’t exactly the most heroic character of the show, but he was a good enough man underneath all of the ambition. His redemption in the finale made it no huge surprise that he was the character to bite the dust, and he definitely died in service of a great plot twist. The assassin stepping over Jack’s corpse to steal the redacted file detailing Peggy’s mysterious wartime misdeeds would be a cruel way to end the saga of Agent Carter. The murderer and file thief needs to face justice, and the audience needs to know just what Peggy got up to that had to be so majorly redacted.
Season 3 has been set up so well that it would be practically criminal not to give Agent Carter another eight or ten episodes in 2017. Season 1 could have almost worked as one-and-done limited run event, but Season 2 set up a world that needs to be explored further. Peggy has never been a heroine whose happily-ever-after revolves only around romance, and her passion for justice is stronger than ever. Howard Stark and Jason Wilkes teaming up to create new technology together promises to be zany in the best way, and Jarvis clearly still has a taste for adventure. The whole ensemble is ready for more action, and we deserve to see them at it again next year.
Besides, by this point next year, we’re almost certainly going to need something fun in the Marvel universe. Captain America: Civil War looks like it’s going to be an awesome movie with awesome action and awesome performances, but also a total bummer that is going to split the Avengers and quite possibly kill off one of the biggest heroes of the franchise to date. But there's something even worse in there for Agent Carter fans, and we'll need another season as therapy.
In the wake of everything falling apart on the big screen for Cap, watching S.H.I.E.L.D. emerge from the S.S.R. under the guiding hand of Peggy could be exactly what we need to cheer ourselves up. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will be beholden to what happens in Civil War, and it’s not like Daredevil or Luke Cage are likely to be barrels of laughs. So come on, ABC, give us Peggy Carter and some more fun 1940s adventure to set up S.H.I.E.L.D. We’ll have earned it by next winter.
There’s no telling how long we’ll have to wait before we find out if more Agent Carter is on the way, but Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will fill the 9 p.m. ET Tuesday timeslot once more starting on March 8. We can at least see Peggy’s legacy in action with Coulson and Co. while we hope for news of a renewal.
