Why We May Not Get Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Season 3 For A Long Time
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt just returned to the schedule last weekend, and we’ll totally forgive you if you spent way more time sitting around in your pajamas and watching Netflix than usual. The series is so likable, Netflix already opted to renew it for Season 3. However, we might be getting Season 3 episodes a bit later than usual. Speaking at the Tribeca Film Festival this weekend, series co-creator Tina Fey revealed that Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt won’t be filming at the usual time, giving her the opportunity to work on the Mean Girls musical.
For Season 2, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt started filming in the summer to finish up before its April premiere date. The show took long enough to film that Ellie Kemper was pregnant by the time a certain rollercoaster scene was written into the later part of the season. While we don’t know Ellie Kemper’s exact due date, Tina Fey does make it clear in this quote (via Deadline) that filming is kicking off later than normal for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Season 3. Since the Netflix comedy hits the schedule some months after filming, I suppose it’s possible that we’ll still get new episodes of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt in April of 2017, however a delay in production could very well mean that Netflix will shuffle around its usual schedule to place Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt in a different premiere slot.
After all, Netflix has a slew of original programs in the works. The subscription streaming service announced just a few months ago that it would be more than doubling the amount of original content that the site has created since House of Cards first hit the schedule a few years ago. All of that new content is expected to land in the schedule in the next year. Therefore, it should be fairly easy to push back Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt should the series need to.
Although a delay in new Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt episodes would be minorly annoying, I still say we should rejoice at this news. First, we know that Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is getting a third season, eventually, which is far better than getting cancelled. Second, that Mean Girls musical sounds amazing and if a delay on Unbreakable means we’re getting Mean Girls faster, I’m hardly going to complain.
We’ll let you know as soon as Season 3 gets a premiere date. In the meantime, you can check out all the shows Netflix has coming up with our premiere schedule. In addition, Season 1 and 2 of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt can currently be binge-watched on Netflix.
